The NLPS Trust was formed as a result of the closure in 2004 of the North London Progressive Synagogue in Stamford Hill.
Originally called the North London Liberal Synagogue when it was founded in 1921 as the second Liberal synagogue in the UK, the congregation grew and prospered under the leadership of a succession of outstanding rabbis. By the 1970s the membership had reached nearly 1,500 but thereafter steadily declined as members moved away from the area. In August 2002 the final service was held, after which the Trustees and Honorary Officers began the processes to dissolve the synagogue.
The synagogue's financial assets were transferred to the NLPS Trust. The capital was subsequently invested and the income is now used to fund the grants awarded. The Trust is governed by Trustees who meet every six months to consider grant applications. Awards must be in line with the Trust’s charitable objectives.
